[#CoachTom Commentary] Self-Mastery is a fundamental ingredient in producing quality work, and also an essential trait for one to feel valued by the organisation. Mastery, coupled with having a clear purpose and a good dose of autonomy, can lift a person higher towards their sense of self-actualisation in becoming antifragile.

A level of competency is necessary when one is working on self-mastery. Acquiring ‘know-how’ stems from experience, events, and knowledge. These have to be internalized and translated to learning before it can be productively applied. As a routine, this builds skills and expertise through self-mastery intentions.

Self-mastery is becoming one of the major requirements for employees and employers in businesses. Due to the nature of global disruption, businesses are placing greater emphasis on resilience and learning to enable agile responses. Some of these disruptions have led to major systemic changes and expectations, such as issues around climate change. Closer inspection may reveal that many conflicts that take place within businesses are a result of the lack in Systems Thinking in dealing with ‘Wicked-Mess’ issues (highly complex on both the technological and social fronts). Organization Learning is key to addressing the complexities in today’s Brittle, Anxious, Non-linear and Incomprehensible (BANI) world. The desired outcome is that beyond being responsive, the organization can also be antifragile.

Employees need to internalize their learning, while organizations need to operationalize these insights to produce results. Starting with self, mastery means making learning an everyday priority. Two fairly straight forward approaches are:

Observational Learning – Associative Learning: By observing things around you in all aspects and associate it with what you know, you can expand your knowledge and work to improve your self-mastery skills combined with making progress in self-development.

Exploration – Self Identifying: Using self-exploration tactics, you can grow and start to identify the self. You can use several techniques to explore and identify you. Some of the useful techniques include meditation, self-analysis, levels of perspectives, or other tactics that work for you.

These approaches serve to move you towards your own sense of self-actualization. At this stage, you will be examining self without giving much deliberate forethought. Although it is a long-drawn out process, yet once you are in the flow, you will be crossing difficult bridges you never thought possible on the path to antifragility.
