Say hello to my little precious, PEARLS! Now, before you start thinking about necklaces, rings and the like – let me clarify. PEARLS is my personal secret sauce for coaching leaders and you would know this if you have gotten your hands on my book: Think.Coach.Thrive! Within those pages, I described PEARLS as an acronym that stands for Purpose, Experiences, Attitude, Resilience, Learning, and Stepping Out. Here’s how this shiny little pearl can polish your leadership skills.

  1. “P” is for Purpose: When I’m coaching a leader, my first question is always about their deeper why. What’s the purpose that lights them up like a Christmas tree? Once we’ve taken the dive to pry out the pearl, we can set the team’s direction, aligning it with the leader’s core values and the company’s vision. And let me tell you, nothing says “Let’s get to work!” like a team that shares a common purpose.
  2. Next, we’ve got Experiences: In our coaching sessions, we dive deep into the treasure trove of past successes. Just like a greatest hits album, these experiences can inspire and provide valuable insights. When leaders share these pearls of wisdom with their team, it’s like a motivational power-up, encouraging everyone to reach for their personal best.
  3. “A” is for Attitude: I’ve seen it again and again; the teams that thrive are the ones with a “can do” attitude. It’s like a pearly white superpower that turns problems into possibilities. Creating a safe space for trial, error, and growth sparks innovation and strengthens team bonds. It’s a win-win!
  4. Resilience is next: During the pandemic, resilience became the ultimate buzzword. But in all seriousness, resilience is the bouncing ball of the business world. When the going gets tough, resilient teams don’t just bounce back, they bounce higher. Team coaching focuses on developing a self-care regime and workload management skills to boost team resilience – just like how a pearl is formed through external disturbances faced by the oyster!
  5. “L” stands for Learning: Learning is the catalyst for growth and development. It’s like the secret ingredient in your grandmother’s famous hokkien mee recipe. In our coaching sessions, we share stories of personal growth and triumph, learning from each other and fueling a collective growth mindset. Each learning episode helps string the different pearls together to form that A-Ha connection!
  6. Finally, Step Out: Stepping out is about translating insights into action. It’s the finishing touch, like the cherry on top of a sundae. As the team watches their leader take bold steps forward, they’re inspired to step outside their comfort zone, too – just like how the pearl is fully formed through the many layers of nacre and finally ready to face the world.

So there you have it, PEARLS, a six-letter recipe for leadership success. As a team coach, I work with teams to incorporate PEARLS into their everyday operations, aligning their vision and purpose with the organization’s goals. It’s a regular process, like brushing your teeth, and it requires dedication and commitment. To put it simply, PEARLS is the secret ingredient for any leader looking to whip up a high-performing team. This approach helps individuals and teams rise above challenges and reach their full potential as precious pearls for the organisation. By incorporating PEARLS into your leadership development plan, you can create a culture of growth and development that benefits everyone it touches. And who wouldn’t want that?
